Now I Am Worried.

The perinatal doctor just called me with my blood work results. The risk that this baby has Downs is elevated. It is 1 in 151. For my age, it should be about 1 in 1,288. My risk is the same as a 40 year old. I am only 28.

I am so scared. I have thoughts running thru my mind. Pictures of a life that this baby may have. I don't know if and when we will have a definite answer. I go back to the perinatal doctor the middle of July for another ultrasound, and I guess we will discuss my options for definite testing then. The only definite way to know before the baby is born is to have an amniocentesis. I am not sure I want to go thru that. The risk for miscarriage after having an amino is 1 in 300-400.

I have too many numbers running thru my head. I don't even know what to think anymore. I am still trying to remain positive, but that is getting harder.

It's going to be OK Lisa, no matter what. Just leave it in God's hands and try not to worry. Follow your heart about the testing...I can tell you that I know SO many moms who went through all that testing and the actual result was MUCH different than the 'prediction' that the doctors gave. Your baby will be beautiful and wonderful and most of all, loved no matter what.
One of the huge reasons I didn't do ANY testing ahead of time is because of the worry and stress it puts on mom and baby. You know you will love the baby NO MATTER what...so just leave it to God and know that things WILL be OK.
HUGE HUGE (((HUGS))) I know it's much easier said than done :)

Don't stress yourself out too much. Children with Down syndrome are a complete blessing and are not as hard to raise as so many depict.

So many of them lead totally normal lives, and even get married.

I have a wonderful 4 year old brother with DS. He has been SUCH a blessing to my family since he was born. He brings so much joy and love into our family and is always there to put a smile on our face.

There is so much that can be done in the days we live in and there is so much potential for children with DS. Here are a few very helpful links:

- www.einstein-syndrome.com (there's even an email listserv that is full of very helpful & kind moms - and a few dads ;))
- www.gotdownsyndrome.net/Book/whatyoucandobook.html - a book (589 pages) my mother and I just finished writing that has information from numerous doctors, therapists and parents. Has everything us and so many other parents would've loved to have known when our children were born or we received the diagnosis.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions and I'd be glad to offer any support I can!

Like the others have said - everything really will be okay, regardless of whether your child has Ds or not. My fourth child does have Ds and although hearing the diagnosis was scary - the reality is not at all. I'll be thinking of you.
